A chalk line is a very handy piece of kit when marking out on flat surfaces you can pick up a chalk line for less than 5 from most tool shops etc. The chalk line tools itself is a highly versatile tool and can be used to mark a perfectly straight line on pretty much all surfaces for pretty much any job that needs a straight line to follow e g. This will snap the taut line against the wall leaving a chalk marking. Set your chalk line on the 1 inch mark at the end of the final board. Press the chalk line down with one finger in approximately the middle of the room. Snap the chalk line.

Extend the chalk line to the center mark at the opposite end of the room. Snap the chalk line leaving a straight chalk mark on the subfloor. Draw the middle of the line away from the wall about an inch and let go. Hold or secure the chalk line at the end point of the line.

Pop the chalk line on either side of your finger without moving the middle position of the line.
